THE MEANING OF THE BELL
Over 50 years ago, Mental Health America issued a call to asylums across the country for the chains and shackles they had used to restrain patients.  MHA then took these tools of mistreatment and forged them into a powerful beacon of freedom: the 300-pound Mental Health Bell.
Today, as the symbol of MHA and its affiliates, the Mental Health Bell continues to ring out hope for the millions of people with mental illness.
